TOWN PROFILE: SALE

The on-going economic success of Manchester is not only regenerating the city, but also its proud and historic satellite towns, which are reaping the benefits of investment and confidence. The North West, one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution, is now back in business. Sale is one of a handful of up-and-coming towns in the region.

OVERVIEW

Sale is a busy commuter town on the southern banks of the River Mersey in Greater Manchester.

It has a population of approximately 52,000 and is host to over 200 retail and independent businesses. Pedestrianised shopping is easy on its tree-lined School Road and in The Square Shopping Centre, while a buoyant café and restaurant quarter is found on Northenden Road. It was thought that the opening of the nearby Trafford Centre would impact on the town centre, but that hasn’t been the case.

For its size, Sale has a large population of office employees and the town centre has nearly 1m square feet of occupied retail, office, leisure and other floor space. Situated at the heart of Trafford, Sale is easily accessible by tram (Metrolink), bus, cycle and car with the M60 motorway less than a mile away. Manchester Airport is within four miles. Metrolink is one of the most successful (and still expanding) light rail systems in the UK, carrying around 30 million passengers every year. The Sale tram stop is in the heart of the town centre. Sale Leisure Centre is one of the area’s largest leisure facilities, with activities and sessions for the whole community.

According to the 2001 Census, the town had a relatively high percentage of residents working in sustainable sectors such as property, business services and finance, compared with the rest of the UK. Conversely, Sale had a relatively low percentage working in agriculture, public administration, and manufacturing. The current unemployment rate is 2.4 per cent, below the national average.

Average house price (Zoopla, January 2019): £316,690
